Ask most recreational golfers how far they hit their sand wedge and they'll give you an answer. Ask them what club they hit from 95 yards and they'll pause. That pause — the uncertainty about which club handles a specific distance — is the wedge gap at work. It's one of the most correctable equipment problems in amateur golf, and most players don't know they have it.

What a Wedge Gap Is

A wedge gap exists when there's a yardage range between your pitching wedge and your sand wedge that neither club handles well. Your pitching wedge might go 130 yards with a full swing. Your sand wedge might go 90 yards with a full swing. That means from 91 to 129 yards, you're hitting either a partial pitching wedge or an overly full sand wedge — both of which require precise calibration and produce inconsistent results under pressure. A gap wedge, typically 50 to 52 degrees, would fill that range comfortably.

How to Find Your Gap

At the range, hit ten shots each with your pitching wedge, sand wedge, and any other wedges you carry. Take the average carry distance (not the longest, not the shortest) for each. Plot the numbers. If any two adjacent clubs are more than 20 yards apart, you have a gap. Common gaps: PW at 130 and SW at 95, leaving 35 yards uncovered. PW at 120 and SW at 80, leaving 40 yards uncovered. The exact numbers don't matter as much as identifying where the problem lives.

Standard Loft Spacing

Most modern sets come with a pitching wedge at around 44 to 46 degrees. A traditional sand wedge sits at 54 to 56 degrees. That's a 10-degree gap. Given that each degree of loft corresponds to roughly 3 to 4 yards, that gap represents 30 to 40 yards of uncovered distance. A gap wedge at 50 to 52 degrees splits that range and gives you a full-swing club for the middle distance. If you also carry a lob wedge at 58 to 60 degrees for shots inside 70 yards, you've built a wedge system that covers the entire short game range consistently.

Why the Gap Causes Specific Mistakes

From 100 yards with no proper gap wedge, golfers typically do one of two things: grip down on the pitching wedge and try to knock it down, or hit the sand wedge harder than their full swing usually goes. Both approaches produce inconsistent results because they require adjustments to a swing that was built around a full motion. The gripped-down pitching wedge tends to go shorter and lower than intended. The overly-forced sand wedge tends to balloon, spin unpredictably, and miss short. Having the right club for the distance removes the compromise entirely.

The Partial Swing Alternative

If adding a gap wedge isn't an option right now, learning a reliable half-swing or three-quarter swing with your existing wedges is a worthwhile skill. The key is calibration: spend time at the range hitting 50%, 75%, and 100% swings with both your pitching and sand wedge and recording the distances. Once you know that a 75% pitching wedge goes 105 yards, you have a reliable option for that yardage. The danger is trying to calibrate on the course during a round — that's a recipe for uncertainty at the worst possible moment. Build the partial swing distances in practice, then use them with confidence on the course.

A Quick Wedge Setup That Works

For most recreational golfers, this four-wedge setup covers the entire short game range: pitching wedge (44 to 46 degrees) for 110 to 130 yards, gap wedge (50 to 52 degrees) for 85 to 110 yards, sand wedge (54 to 56 degrees) for 65 to 85 yards, and lob wedge (58 to 60 degrees) for short chips and bunker shots under 65 yards. Four wedges is a lot, which means dropping one of the higher irons from the bag — most players carry a 4-iron that they hit poorly and would be better served by a fourth wedge they use constantly. The swap almost always helps the scorecard.
