How Many Beers Is the Right Number for a Round of Golf

This is not a health article. This is a practical guide. Golf takes four hours and involves a lot of standing around waiting for the group ahead of you. Drinking beer during a round is a tradition with real strategic implications — too few and the back nine drag, too many and you lose the ability to feel your grip pressure, which turns out to be important.

The Standard Pace

Most recreational golfers land somewhere between one beer every two holes and one beer every three holes. That puts the average round at six to nine drinks depending on pace of play and how long the breaks are. Six is probably the sweet spot for most people — enough to feel it without becoming a liability to your group.

The Beer Cart Problem

The beer cart doesn't always show up when you need it. Courses with bad cart routing leave you dry on holes 8, 9, 14, and 17 — exactly when you want one most. The solution is to buy two at the turn. Always buy two at the turn. Carry one in from 10 to about 13, crack the second around 14. This is a system that works consistently.

Hot Weather Adjustments

Heat changes the calculation. On a 90-degree day, the same number of drinks hits harder than in October. If it's hot, cut your number by two and replace them with water somewhere in the middle of the round. You'll play better on the back nine, which matters if there's money involved.

Cart vs. Walking

Walking 18 holes is about five miles. Alcohol processes differently when you're walking it off between shots versus riding. Walkers generally handle one more than riders without the same effect. It's not science, it's just what tends to happen.

The Threshold

Most golfers have a personal threshold around drinks four and five where they stop caring about their score in the best possible way. The tight takeaway loosens. The overthinking stops. The short putts get hit instead of studied. Some of the best casual golf happens right in that window. Then drink seven shows up and the wheels come off and you're searching for two different balls in the same fairway.

Morning Rounds

7 a.m. tee times and beer before 9 a.m. is a separate category. It happens. It's fine. Just know that starting early means finishing by noon, which means the rest of the day is yours — and there's a limit to how many drinks you want to have had by noon if you have plans. Adjust accordingly.

The Range

Somewhere between four and eight is where golf is at its best. Below four and it's just exercise with dress shoes. Above eight and it's a cart ride with some swinging. Find your number, know your threshold, and always buy two at the turn.
